Perched high above the Tasman Valley, Plateau Hut sits in a world of ice, rock, and shifting alpine light.  As the sun edged over the horizon, it struck the summit of Aoraki / Mt. Cook summit igniting in soft gold before the light spilled down its ridgelines. To the left, the jagged spine of the Malte Brun Range, its peaks etched sharply against the brightening sky. In the centre of the scene, the Hochstetter Icefall tumbles dramatically from the upper slopes of the Grand Plateau, a frozen cascade of fractured ice feeding into the Tasman Glacier winding through the valley far below. From Plateau Hut, you feel suspended above it all — surrounded by creaking ice, distant avalanches, and the changing colour of snow as sunrise unfolds minute by minute.
